More Carti Tupile Photos

Pictures and excerpts sent 10/25/2016:

"I'm sending some pictures...

- "One is a picture I took while in Mulatupu. If you look, you can see a girl that was painted black. Its not as dark as it usually is when they first put it on. Im guessing they painted here like 4 or 5 days before. Shes wearing a striped shirt."

- "A name that I saw on a boat in Carti Tupile. Welcome to Dulegaya and try pronouncing that name. haha! That's the way Delgaya is..Hard!"

- "A goofy pic I took with a painting I saw on this wall of two silas. The religious leaders in Kunayala (also their government leaders). I think the facial expressions are hilarious. I'm trying to copy it. haha!!"

"One of these pictures is Isla del Contador that I've mentioned in the past. Nobody lives there but it was really close to an island we visited."

"The other is a picture of another island named Nurdup that I've mentioned before. Everyone that lives on Nurdup are Jehovas Witness members and nobody speaks Spanish."

"Two pictures of me on Nurdup....

....and the other is a long distance photo of Mulatupu."

"Pictures I took while on Isla del Contador."

"two pictures of the toilets out here..."

"...and the other is me on the island I visited this week called Nalu Nega."

"A picture from when we propaganda Blitkrieged Mulatupu. I didn't realize till after but each person is holding a different lesson pamphlet. ha! that was cool."

"A boat full of fish. Those fish were a dollar each."

- "These were my "white shirts" in Blas. This was the one I burned."

- "Rolling in the chastity pamplets... I have 20...game time."

- "A view of some of the other small islands near Nalu Nega."

- "A picture of our church in Cart Tupile. Its built over the ocean and you hear the waves during church.

- "I bought a whole chicken. did I eat the feet after frying them?  Claro (of course)"

- "Our investigator Ramon in the middle that's getting baptized this Saturday."

- "One is a picture of our blind investigator Ernesto. If he goes to church we can baptize him. It's tough because his mom is being really protective. He really wants to go and loves our visits."

- "This other picture is me with our other two investigators that are getting baptized this week. Yexel and Deisi. They're cousins...(I couldn't get a picture with the other person that's going to get baptized named Gladiz. She was in the city but is probably back now)."

- "Our investigator Einer. Hes awesome and will get baptized soon (Doesn't have a baptism date yet). Hes rowed by himself to come to church now 3 times. Tough though because hes super busy during the week. Makes time on Sunday though."

- "Where I've bathed the past 6 weeks when we had water."

 - "This was a picture that I took in the congress hut. This is where the village members are required to meet usually about 3 times a week to hear old men swing around in hammocks and retell the history of their ancestors. You can see the two different flags. One is a flag of Kunayala and the other has a swastika. However, its been a symbol they were using way before the Nazis stole it. Its a symbol of peace. They were fine with me taking the photo which I though was really cool.

- "These little wooden dolls are called nuchus. I've explained these before. Its a cultural thing and they have one for each person of the family. They believe when your sick if you sing to them they help to heal you. A little interesting."

- "The little girl that is part of the Martinez family. Shes so cute and loves her puppy."

- "The house we were living in. I lived on the 2nd level."

- "The church in Carti Tupile (everyone loves the church basketball court)."

- "Saying bye to some friends in Carti Tupile."

 - "This is me working on the papers for the area book. I didnt escape homework these two years. Each day after teaching people we update the papers to show what lessons have been done, where they live, contact info, and how they are progressing. These were a few of the papers that me and Elder Ricks made. Not all of them though."

- "I made my companion Elder Ricks a banner as my departing device for missionaries in Carti Tupile
(It reads...Fight the Inner sloth) haha!!"

- "Leaving Carti Tupile"

- "Another pic I took while in Nalu Nega with little kid."

- "A big hermit crab. They make good fish bait"

- "Another pic with the monkey."

Pictures and excerpts from extra emails sent home 10/17/2016:

"Hey guys. I'm sending some pictures now. I'm on an island with pretty slow connection sometimes and I have a lot of pics I want to send today. Left these to load and did studies.

- "One of these pictures is me standing in front of a welcome sign to the island Nargana where I go on divisions sometimes."

- "One of these pictures is me standing in front of a statue of Christ. I'm taking this picture on an island called Corazon de Jesus (heart of Christ) which is connected to Nargana by a bridge."

- "The last pic here is showing how the two islands (Nargana and Corazon de Jesus) are connected with a bridge. I just wanted to send these because I like them and wanted you guys to see what its like there."

- "A pic I took in Nargana with the boat the district president uses to get around. Its called the Captain Moroni. I thought that was cool."

- "While in Nargana we traveled to the personal island of a member. It was pretty beautiful so I took a pic. The water was about the same color as my tie and clear."

- "This picture taken from off the shore is an island in Nargana called Mormon Island. Also owned by a member. There the missionaries of Nargana usually do their baptisms"

Pictures and excerpts from Jaden's emails sent home 10/3/2016:

"Two of these photos (the wooden sticks) are showing something the Kunas call a nuchu. According to the Kuna tradition a nuchu has a spirit and hardcore kunas will bath them, give them food, and place them under their hammocks when they are sick. When they place them under their hammock and sing to them, they believe the spirit will use its magic to heal them. I've talked about witch doctors a little during my time in Ukupa. Those men are the ones that supposedly harness the power through singing and bless those that are sick. They would normally burn inscense while singing as well. I just thought this was interesting. These in the photo are actually really large. Its possible these are different but Ive seen smaller ones more often that can fit in your hand. Usually a family will carve one for each family member. When a family member dies the nuchu must be removed into the jungle. If people try taking it back to the village people get angry because it has a dead spirit. They have some interesting (a little weird cultural beliefs sometimes). Many of this new generation don't believe it or follow its customs."
